Destination
Mountain lakes, juniper forests and peaks above 5,000 metres — four hours from Dushanbe.
The Fann Mountains lie in north-western Tajikistan, in the Sughd Region, between the Zarafshan Range to the north and the Gissar Range to the south. They form part of the Pamir-Alay mountain system. Within an area of roughly 650 square kilometres, the region is home to more than thirty mountain lakes and around a dozen peaks rising above 5,000 metres. The highest is Chimtarga Peak, at 5,489 metres.
The region is best known for its lakes. Iskanderkul is the largest, covering 3.4 square kilometres and reaching depths of up to 72 metres. It is named after Alexander the Great. Haft Kul (the Valley of Seven Lakes) is a chain of seven lakes cascading along the valley, each with its own distinctive shade of blue. Higher up are the Alauddin Lakes, nestled at the foot of the region's highest peaks.
The Fann Mountains are among the most accessible mountain destinations in Central Asia. The drive from Dushanbe takes around four hours via the Anzob Tunnel, and the region can also be reached from Khujand or Panjakent. No permit is required to visit. There are routes for experienced trekkers as well as scenic trails suitable for visitors with little or no hiking experience.
The best time to visit is from June to September. Earlier in the season, snow still covers the high passes, while in spring the rivers run higher with snowmelt.
